Naturopathic Medicine

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process.  The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods.

What is an ND?

Naturopathic Physicians are educated and trained in accredited 4 year naturopathic medical colleges. They diagnose, prevent, and treat acute and chronic illness to restore and establish optimal health by supporting the person’s inherent self-healing process. Rather than just suppressing symptoms, naturopathic doctors work to identify underlying causes of illness, and develop personalized treatment plans to address them. Their Therapeutic Order™, identifies the natural order in which all therapies should be applied to provide the greatest benefit with the least potential for damage. While many naturopathic doctors are trained in primary care, like conventional medical doctors (MDs), some choose to specialize or focus their practices.

Naturopathy at the Naturopathic Health Clinic

The Naturopathic Health Clinic of North Carolina holds a vision of helping people and the community find their way to wellness and away from suffering, by treating the whole person, rather than just the disease. We practice comprehensive medicine and Dr. Blake offers a number of services including: natural, conventional, alternative, and integrative healing methods which include Functional Medicine, Biofeedback, Ayurveda, tissue manipulation, botanical medicine, homeopathy, nutrition and exercise therapy.

Your first visit with Dr. Blake Kovner:

The first time you sit down with Dr. Blake, she takes up to 2 hours to sit with you and listen to your story, getting the best possible understanding of you as a whole person including your health picture.  During this visit, she will review your labs and imaging with you and explain what the values mean with regard to your health and prior diagnoses.  She conducts a thorough health history in order make well-informed determinations about how best to support your whole system.

For these reasons, we kindly request that you fill out and email back all of your intake paperwork, which includes copies of labs, imaging, medications and supplements at least a day before your visit.  This allows us to best prepare for your individualized visit so we can meet your needs by predicting the flow of the visit as best we can which allows you to spend the entire 2 hours with the doctor.  Most importantly to patients, this efficiency allows Dr. Blake to compose a Care Plan by the end of your visit that outlines how our work together will likely unfold.  While complexity of the case determines the doctor’s ability to complete this task by the end of the visit, you can help expedite the process by having the full 2 hours of your visit.

Please note that those who bring completed paperwork to their visit, will be asked to wait in the waiting room for the first 10 – 15 minutes of the appointment while the doctor previews it.  If the paperwork is not already complete at the time your visit is scheduled, you will be asked to complete it in the waiting room prior to seeing the doctor.  Please note that this a very thorough intake and so paperwork tends to take patients about 30 mins to complete it so please please please do not save it for the day of your visit so you are able to complete the entire 2 hour visit and get your needs met.

Without labs, imaging and/or a comprehensive list of all your medications and supplements (a picture of the front and back of the bottle so ingredients can be clearly seen is fine or you just bring them to your visit), Dr. Blake will not be able to provide you with a Care Plan.  A smartphone that is logged into and displaying your patient portal is not sufficient for our records.
